Facebook has changed so much since I first joined. I don’t remember exactly when I joined, but I gotta believe it is approaching a decade since I started.
I have enjoyed connecting with friends, church members, and people from my past. Facebook was instrumental in helping 40 Things to Give up for Lent go viral. If it was not for Facebook, I am not sure it would have happened.
But in the last year it seems there is a toxic atmosphere surrounding Facebook. It seems that it has become more of a forum for political opinion than anything else. Most of what is posted runs on the shallow end with questionable sources. I doubt hardly a person has changed there political affinities based on what they have read on Facebook.
I see the benefit of Facebook in terms of sharing what is happening at church and things on my websites. But it is a suck on productivity. I don't believe it is healthy for the soul. There are better alternatives.
One of the things I have done is to remove Facebook from the home screen of my phone. It is the idea of out of sight, out of mind. Long time ago I turned off all notifications from the service. So it is not good bye to Facebook, but you will be seeing me there a lot less.
