[...] Two weeks ago I had shared in my weekly email how Lord of Life was having some trouble meeting our expenses at the end of the year. Our expenses had exceeded our income. Our ministry has accomplished some awesome things in the past year, but as we look forward to the next year it was important that we live within the means of God’s provision. We don’t want to spend what we don’t have. [...]

Hey thanks for this great message. having a very difficult time sensing God's presence at the moment, yet I KNOW He is with me and will always be with me. I just needed the reminder to hang in there, trust in God, and to not give up hope :)

I had a few angry moments when I went through my surprise divorce 20 years ago. But I quickly learned that the devil owns anger. I desperately wanted my 4 children (ages 8-18) to remain whole and innocent. I did not want to be the bitter ex wife. I had to dissipate my anger. There were two things I found useful. 1) I went to sleep at night listening to classical music. 2) I laughed out loud when the devil tried to warp my thoughts. I might be driving the car forcing myself to laugh and smile (remember - God is the Lord of the dance!). Pretty soon the evil destructive thoughts of my ex were gone and I could start to converse with God and notice the changing leaves on the trees or a rainbow. God is good (when?) ALL THE TIME!

Kristen - such a great reply and insight. We are often much better at applying God's law to others than we are at applying it to ourselves. When we start to point the finger at others we must realize the finger is going to point right back at us. That is always the temptation when teaching about sin. We start thinking about all the other people who need to hear this teaching and be convicted in their sin. But I need to be convicted in my sin. The message is for me. I need to hear it. I need to repent and receive the love of Jesus. If Paul was the chief of sinners. What does that make me? It all goes back to humility.

One person replied to me on Sunday and said, "Pastor you were preaching to me today."

I told him, "That was not totally true, I was preaching to myself."

Next Sunday I will be sharing about David and Nabal. David was out to kill Nabal because he was insulted by Nabal. But the wise Abigail intervenes and is able to show David that he is no better than Nabal and just as foolish. Beware judging and convicting him, lest you be judged and convicted yourself. Praise God, David had the humility to listen to Abigail and recognize his own sin.

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. I am glad for the conversation.

I think the careful part about this message I took away is that it can be a dangerous trap to fall into looking for the lawlessness in others, that we pridefully don't look at our own shortcomings (which include pride). Also, what we perceive as lawlessness may not always be as evil as that. We may not truly know the inner heart of others. The man of lawlessness that Paul speaks of in 1Thessalonians Ch.2 is truly evil and is an antichrist. This is not something we need to fear though because God has already defeated him. God is in complete control.
I thought that verse James 4:10 at the end were beautiful words to live by.(Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. Let’s not think of ourselves more highly than we ought, but think of ourselves with sober judgement (see Romans 12:3), that Jesus would be glorified in our lives.)
Interestingly enough, my phone's bible quote for the day today is the very next two verses, James 4:11-12: (Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?)
Another verse that came to mind was Ephesians 4:29,31-32: (Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Get rid of bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.)
The Bible calls us to love one another. When we put on the cloak of humility and realize how terrible sinners we ourselves are and how awesome our God is, it is so much easier to truly love and to forgive and strive to be more like Christ.
